Life after retirement
Mary Battams learned the value of hard work by working hard. Born in Lansdowne on a farm, Mary started her working career at the tender age of 16. “I didn’t have many idle moments,” the 83-year-old reflects with a fond smile. The second oldest of four children, Mary’s hard work extended beyond her family and into her community. After settling in Gananoque with her husband and six children, Mary worked at several local businesses before retiring as a receptionist at the Gananoque Reporter.
Helping others is time well-spent for this doctor
It is said people pay the doctor for his trouble; for his kindness they remain in his debt. If this is true, many people are indebted to Brian Tunnicliffe. A retired family physician, the friendly doctor has helped thousands of people in Gananoque during his 45-year career. For him, it was an honour to serve his community. For others, Dr. Tunnicliffe was a hero.
Handsome eggs called memories
Kay Garland may be the only woman alive who has a gift for every person who attends her funeral. A decorator of eggs for the past 50 years, she has stashed-away 80 beautifully decorated eggs for the day she is to be buried. “If anyone wants an egg, they’ll just have to come to my funeral,” she chuckles.
