Erica Merkley knows quiet people have the loudest minds.

Speaking from Carveth Care Center where she has worked as a Registered Practical Nurse for the past 14 years, Erica notes softly, “I’m pretty quiet. I keep to myself at home. Home is where my heart is.”

A resident of Lyndhurst, Erica is the Carveth Care Centre Employee of the Month for July.

Her duties include administering medication and providing medical attention to people in long-term care.

“I’ve known Erica my entire life,” says Brett Gibson, Administrator. “It is a pleasure to have her as part of the Carveth family. She is a dedicated nurse who cares deeply about the wellbeing of others.”

Grateful for the feedback, Erica admits, “I love it here. I’ll be here forever.”

Asked what she likes about her job, the 39-year-old looks thoughtful before she replies.

“I like everything,” she explains. “It’s rewarding work and I always learn something new. I like being able to help the residents. When they’re at the end of their life, I like to keep them comfortable.”

When she’s not at work, Erica can be found at home with her husband, two teenage sons and four Labrador Retrievers.

“I like to hang-out with my dogs, they’re my pride and joy,” she says with a smile during a short break on a busy Tuesday afternoon in mid-June.

Grateful for the warm and friendly atmosphere in the home, Erica admits, “It’s like family here. My nan and aunt live here. The owners treat the staff like family. ”

Proud to be part of the accredited home located in the heart of Gananoque, Erica always wanted to be a nurse.

“I never pictured myself being anything different,” she confirms.

“I care deeply about everybody,” she adds kindly. “I would give someone my last nickel if they needed it.”

Carveth Care Centre is grateful for the compassionate health care of Erica Merkley. To learn more about living or working in our home, please call 613-382-4752.
