The calming effect of animal love
Animals have the power to speak a great language. Used for centuries as companions and work animals, they humanize the world in difficult times. For many, they are a gift to mankind and serve as a reminder of our responsibility to preserve and care for all life. Walking slowly down the halls of a local retirement home, a Golden Retriever brushes lightly past the elderly and frail. He stops to be petted and shower his affection on residents. “It’s amazing what Frodo brings-out in people. I think he brings-out the…

Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom
Margaret and Bill Campsall are living proof the high road is always respected and honesty & integrity are always rewarded. Married for more than 70 years, they are happily reaping what they sowed. Hard workers and dedicated volunteers when they were younger, the couple is blessed with constant companionship and support in retirement. “It’s all coming back to us now,” says Bill, a respected leader in the Canadian Armed Forces and private industry. “What goes around - comes around,” agrees Margaret. Residents of Helen Henderson Care Centre since July, the…

102-year-old proves youth has no age
From the deepest desires often comes the deadliest hate. That adage from Socrates holds an ounce-of-truth for Pearl Thurlby. Sitting comfortably in a retirement home a few days before her 102nd birthday in the fall of 2015, Pearl reflects on the condition of the world. “When did hate get such as big hand,” she muses. “No one seems to like anyone anymore. Especially people who are supposed to lead countries.” A resident of Kingston all her life except for the five years she travelled with her husband while he worked…

In a world of constant change, her kindness remains the same
Audrey Tordoff reached maturity when the world needed typewriter mechanics and you could buy a new wedding dress & matching bonnet for under $30. Seventy years later, the friendly woman reflects on her life from a wheelchair that counteracts her missing leg. Diagnosed with chronic lymphedema, Audrey works around her limitations. “I take one day at a time. If today is bad, tomorrow will be better,” she says wisely. A resident of Helen Henderson Care Centre for two years, Audrey talks freely about her fascinating life.

Replacing loneliness with laughter
One of the beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and be understood. It is a truth that comes naturally to a pair of volunteers at Helen Henderson Care Centre. Laughing as they complete each other’s sentences, Stephen Kincaid and Chris Russell are friends who bring-out the best in each other and the people around them. Talking from the comfort of the home’s memory-care ward, the men look fondly at the residents who receive dedicated nursing care. “What you’re doing is making them forget where they are and making…

Retirement lodge earns prestigious recognition
Helen Henderson Care Centre has earned provincial recognition for its work with retirees. Home to thousands of residents over the past 31 years, the Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge just received the highest professional status for retirement homes in Ontario. On Nov. 26, the lodge was accredited by the Ontario Retirement Communities Association (ORCA). It was the home’s first attempt to obtain the three-year designation. The accreditation is a prestigious accomplishment because it is hard to achieve. It shows the home meets, or exceeds, a rigorous set of industry standards.

Meet residents at Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge Open House May 1
Margaret Wells knows a good thing when she sees it. Sharp-witted at 98 years old, Margaret reflects back to more than 70 years ago when she married her husband within nine months of meeting each other. “It doesn’t seem that long ago, really,” she says with a smile. A widow for the past 14 years, Margaret likes to recall her marriage that spanned 60 years. “I guess my work here on earth isn’t finished,” Margaret says kindly about life without her beloved husband, Earl. “But I’m not sure what I…

Today’s special moments are tomorrow’s memories
Sometimes we never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. When that happens, Majorie Hogan is there to capture it. “She’s our memory-keeper,” says Diana Hogan proudly about her mother-in-law. “She usually can figure-out (historical family questions), and give us the answer.” For Marjorie, it’s a hobby she’s enjoyed over her lifetime of 100 years. Born in Joyceville on Aug. 23, 1915, Marjorie is the middle child in a family of seven. At three years old, she moved to a farmhouse in Amherstview; a friendly community…
