A young nurse in Amherstview has found professional satisfaction working with seniors.

“I like being a part of everyone’s life,” says Jess Scalf, a Registered Practical Nurse who has worked at Helen Henderson Care Centre for the past six years. “I really like my work.”

A graduate of St. Lawrence College, Jess is earning praise from residents and staff at the accredited nursing home.

“Jess is a wonderful person and an equally wonderful nurse,” says Melissa Locke, Assistant Director of Care. “She is a conscientious and efficient nurse whose heart is always with the residents. Jess is a pleasure to have on our team.”

Grateful for her time and talent, residents and staff named the young nurse the Employee of the Month for March.

Jess smiles when she hears about the recognition from the home that cared for her beloved grandfather.

“A girl I went to school with suggested I work here,” she explains about the beginning of her career at Helen Henderson Care Centre. “Once I got a job here, I couldn’t leave. I liked it too much.”

Asked what she likes about her job, Jess notes, “I like helping people and making a difference.”

Jess describes herself as easy going and non-judgemental.

“I think I have a good sense of humour,” she adds with a smile.

According to Jess, the retirement lodge and nursing home is a special place to live and work.

“It’s nice how a family owns and operates Helen Henderson Care Centre. I think it’s an actual home, here,” she says, looking around. “I know this is my second home.”

When she’s not working, Jess can be found travelling or enjoying time with her boyfriend. She owns a dog and likes to live in the moment.

“I try not to think too much ahead of time,” she replies when asked about her future goals. “I’m just really happy where I am right now. There is not much I would change.”

Helen Henderson Care Centre is proud of the work of Jess Scalf, an RPN who enjoys working with seniors.
