Her eyes water and her breath becomes shallow when she recalls the time her sick baby was given a year to live shortly after the death of her husband. Her loss and grief are still palpable almost 17 years after her son’s life-saving surgery. It is a story that has a happy ending, but it is almost impossible to remain stoic as pain and fear seep from her voice.

Karina Stickle likes to watch what her hands will do next. Constantly on the move, the friendly young woman doesn’t know where to put her hands when she stops to talk for an idle moment. Preoccupied with her thoughts, they move quietly to stroke her stomach where her second child has been growing for almost seven months. Unaware of her actions, Karina smiles when she notices where her hands have gone. “I’m pretty excited,” the 28-year-old Activation Aide admits about the impending birth of her son.

Research-based innovation celebrated
Did you know that living in zero gravity accelerates the aging process? In fact, six months in space can increase the stiffness of an astronaut’s arteries by as much as 20 years on earth. The good news is, scientists think this loss is recoverable. They also think this research can help reverse age-related health issues. But the study of astronauts in space isn’t stopping at arteries. Scientists are also studying blood pressure regulation and blood flow to the brain.

The power of compassionate care
Dear Helen Henderson Care Centre, Jean Harrison was the love of my life. She was the person I trusted with my dreams, fears and heart. Jean cared for me like she cared for others, with all of her energy and compassion. She was kind, gentle and deserved the best in life. Perhaps better than me. But, as luck would have it, she agreed to be my wife and allowed me to love her. It was an honour to go through life by her side.
