Rachel Baker appreciates what many people take for granted.

A caretaker of people, animals and land, the 29-year-old is passionate about preserving and improving the world around her.

“When I’m not working as a Personal Support Worker, I’m working on the family farm in Enterprise,” she says. “I enjoy working with the beef cows and goats. It’s kind of my relaxing time. I like to walk-out in the field with them.”

Speaking from Helen Henderson Care Centre where she has worked as a Personal Support Worker for the past year, Rachel says she enjoys her off-farm job as much as her cattle and crops.

“I like it here,” she says about her job in the long-term care home. “I enjoy working with the residents, especially on Reception Three. My grandfather had dementia before his death 14 years ago. On Reception Three, I get to see all of the different aspects of the disease and get a better understanding of what people go through.”

She notes with a smile, “If you’re having an off day and a resident smiles at you, it makes everything better. I also enjoy working with the staff here. They have made me feel welcome.”

Rachel’s smile widens when she hears she is the Employee of the Month for September.

Speaking on behalf of the accredited home, Director of Care Sue Reynolds notes, “Rachel is a quiet soul who provides amazing compassionate care to the residents of Helen Henderson Care Centre. We feel fortunate to have her on our nursing team. She is a wonderful example of the kindness and caring in our home.”

Asked to describe herself, Rachel notes, “I’m quiet until you get to know me and then I open up more.”
