A retired bookkeeper has won Resident of the Year at Carveth Care Centre.

Speaking from her room at Carveth Retirement Lodge in late May 2019, Jean Leeder admits, “I was very surprised to hear I had won this award. I’m very honoured. I really didn’t expect it. A lot of people do more than I do.”

Jean has lived at Carveth for almost three years. In that time, she has made a positive social impact on the home and its residents.

“I like the companionship of the residents in the lodge,” she says about her living conditions. “I also enjoy going over to the nursing home side. I know quite a few residents because I use to volunteer there. My (late) husband also lived there for two years.”

Speaking on behalf of Carveth Care Centre, Administrator Brett Gibson notes, “This award has been around a long time and the names on in it represent some of the great people who have called Carveth home.  Jean winning this reward is very deserving. She is a very nice lady who is respected by everyone. Her volunteer work with Residents’ Council, the roaming library and our palliative care team, are only a few of the things she has a passion for. Congratulations on being named Resident of the Year, Jean. Thank-you for all that you do.”

The mother of two adult children, Jean enjoys the daily activities at the home such as live music, special meals and games. When she’s not helping around the home, or participating in activities, she can be found working on a jigsaw puzzle or reading a good book.

“I love to read,” she admits. “I read a lot.”

Unknown to a lot of people is Jean’s passion for baseball.

“I like baseball,” she says with a smile. “The Blue Jays, especially. My husband use to play baseball. I grew-up going to baseball games.”

Carveth Care Centre is grateful for the graceful and giving nature of Jean Leeder. To learn more about living or working in our home, please call 613-382-4752.
