Betty Reed is happiest when she is helping others.

Born and raised in Elgin, the 71-year-old has lived her entire life in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. She raised her family on a beef farm near Delta and worked at Maple View Lodge in Athens for 23 years. A sore back prompted her to retire at 65 from the job she loved.

A loving mother and grandmother, Betty arrived at Carveth Care Centre in March 2019. In a short amount of time, she made a big impact in the home.

Almost one-year after arriving, she was named the home’s Resident of the Year.

Smiling brightly, Betty admits her day was greatly improved when she was informed of the award.

“I think everyone should be Resident of the Year,” she says kindly. “I just love the residents and I feel like I want to help them. I do not judge them by their sickness. They are who they are.”

Described as a friendly soul, staff say her quiet compassion and empathy for others is always evident.

“She is always there with a helping hand for others and helps staff whenever they need her,” says Activity Director, Shannon Buell.

Grateful for the good care she is receiving at the popular long-term care home, Betty says the staff are excellent and admits she is still adjusting to her surroundings. She misses her home and dancing with her husband.

“My husband and I used to dance every Saturday,” she says nostalgically. “I love the music and entertainment here. It is a privilege to have them. There are so many activities to do such as games, quizzes and puzzles.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Administrator Brett Gibson notes, “This time of year is always one I enjoy as we honour a Resident of the Year who is selected by our staff and residents. Our recipient this year is Betty Reed who is a very deserving award winner. She is a constant presence in our recreation programs and very well respected in our home. She is truly deserving of this prestigious award.”

Carveth Care Centre is delighted to host a special dinner for Betty on June 11. When COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, we will plan something special for her and her family. To learn more about living or working here, please call 613-382-4752.
