Sandra Esipu is doing what she loves and loves what she is doing.

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) at Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview, the 41-year-old Kingston woman inherited her caring nature from the women in her family: her mother and aunt were also PSWs.

“It felt right,” she says about her career in health care.

Sandra has worked at the long-term care home for one-year. She transferred here from Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque, a sister home to Helen Henderson Care Centre.

“I worked at Carveth for 16 years,” she explains. “My life is in long-term care.”

Although she hasn’t been at the Amherstview home for long, she has already made a big impression on the residents and staff.

“I like the teamwork here,” she says about the home’s workforce. “Everyone helps and I appreciate that.”

Asked about her favourite part of the job, she replies quickly, “I love bath teams because it feels like there’s more one-on-one care.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Director of Care Sue Reynolds notes, “Sandra quietly goes about her day, but is a superhero in disguise. The footprint she leaves with both the residents she cares for, and her co- workers, is positive, caring and uplifting. She makes it look effortless, but knowing the impact she has in everyone’s daily life is heartwarming.”

Pleased with the feedback, Sandra smiles at the news she is the home’s Employee of the Month for February 2023.

“I’m kind of shocked, but excited,” she says about the workplace award that is based on merit.

When Sandra is not at work, she likes to spend time with family and friends. She is the proud mother of three children.

Asked to describe herself, she uses words such as busy mom and very caring. She admits she’s shy until she gets to know you.

As for her current goal, Sandra has only traveled to Miami Florida. She is currently saving for a trip to Cuba or Dominican Republic. She also wants to buy a house.
