A Grade 11 student at Ernestown Secondary School in Odessa has won his first workplace award.

Speaking from Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview where he has worked as a dishwasher for the past four months, Nicolas Sparkes smiles at the news he is the home’s Employee of the Month for March 2023.

“I’m pretty happy,” says the 16-year-old with a grin about the award. “I didn’t even know students could win this award.”

Asked about his job and workplace, Nicolas notes, “I like it here; I like the people.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Food Nutrition Services Manager Shaun Stephenson says, “Right from the start, Nick has been a great addition to our team.  He’s dependable in every aspect of his job and always willing to help others.  You can tell by working with Nick that he cares about what he does as well as the residents who he does it for.”

Interestingly, Nicolas’ stepfather works at Helen Henderson Care Centre as a Personal Support Worker. He has an older brother who is 20.

When he’s finished high school, Nicolas may pursue horticulture in college or go straight to work in landscaping. He hopes to own his own business someday. His seasonal jobs include contract landscaping and construction.

Asked to describe himself, Nicolas says sheepishly, “I guess I’m nice. I make a lot of jokes.”
