Cook celebrates first year in Canada with workplace award Featured
A cook at Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview is celebrating his first year in Canada with his first workplace award.
Named Employee of the Month at the home for October 2024, Charlie Villafuerte smiles at the good news.
“I really love working here. I have a good boss and great coworkers,” the friendly 28-year-old Kingston man says with a grin.
Originally from the Philippines, Charlie and his wife arrived in Canada on Aug. 13, 2023. One month later, he started working as a cook at the popular home that offers retirement living and long-term care.
“It’s good here, we like it in Canada,” Charlie says about his new residence.
Speaking in early August, Charlie talks with an easy confidence and quick smile. Asked to describe himself, he uses words such as happy and friendly.
“I hope I’m friendly,” he adds with a laugh. “I’m trying to be.”
A valued member of the Helen Henderson family, Charlie is known for his helpful nature and talent preparing food. He admits he like to take a Canadian dish such as spaghetti and give it a Filipino flavour.
“This is the place where I hope to retire,” he says kindly. “I enjoy every moment here.”
When he’s not at work, Charlie can be found at home playing online video games. He likes to cook different foods for his wife who determines if he serves it to others.
“I want to continue learning about food and experimenting. My wife is the judge,” he says with a chuckle.
