Personal Support Worker applauded for compassionate health care
As she faithfully works the night shift at a nursing home down the street from her house in Amherstview, Cindy Whan is quietly improving the lives of the community’s most vulnerable citizens while the rest of the world sleeps.
“I like my job a lot,” says the friendly 26-year-old who has worked as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) at Helen Henderson Care Centre for the past year.
“If I ever show-up for work in a bad mood, the residents put me in a good mood. I’ve always wanted to work with the elderly.”
The proud mother of a nine-year-old girl, Cindy is the home’s Employee of the Month for April.
“Cindy is a quiet, kind, caring young woman who takes care of the residents well,” says Melissa Locke, Assistant Director of Care. “She has a calmness when working with the residents that puts them at ease.”
When she’s not working the night shift at the popular nursing home in Amherstview, Cindy likes to walk her dog or hike.
Asked to describe herself, she uses words such as kind, caring and compassionate. She says other people would describe her as shy.
Her dream is to open her own home one day.
“Not a big one,” she adds quickly. “A little one that offers assisted living.”
