Young Dietary Aide recognized for good work
A 23-year-old Kingston woman has won her first workplace award.
Speaking from Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview where she was worked for the past seven months, Victoria Dorego cries tears of happiness when informed she is the home’s Employee of the Month for February 2021.
“That’s really nice, thank-you,” she replies when informed of her award. “I’m overwhelmed. It’s really sweet.”
A graduate of the Nutrition and Food Program at Ryerson University, Victoria joined the long-term care home as a temporary worker during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic that began mid-March 2020. Shortly after joining the home, she was offered permanent work as a Dietary Aide.
Her work at the family owned and operated home has allowed her to take a break from school and be closer to family. The work is allowing her to rest between completing her degree and possibly upgrading to a masters.
“Doing a masters is a big decision,” she confirms. “I don’t think I was ready for it. It’s another two years of school. I really wanted to come home and spend time with my family. This has been a really explorative year and this job allows me to see them and be closer to my grandparents who I couldn’t see while I was away at school. I’ve been enjoying this job for more than one-reason.”
Victoria’s work incudes serving food to the residents and ensuring the dining rooms are clean and orderly.
“I’ve been really enjoying it,” she says with a smile. “I love the residents.”
“Victoria is bright, organized and here for the right reasons,” says Donna Joudoin, a manager at the home who nominated Victoria for the workplace award. “She is kind to the residents and works well independently and in a team. She is amazing.”
“Victoria started with us as a Universal worker and quickly became an important part of our dietary team,” adds Julie Metcalfe, Food Service Nutrition Manager. “Victoria always has a hello when she sees you and will always leave with ‘have a wonderful day!’ She is soft spoken, sweet and has a good heart. It is clear she cares about our residents’ wellbeing. She is a true blessing to have around. We are grateful she is part of our amazing team.”
Victoria appreciates the feedback.
“I’m extremely grateful to be here,” she says kindly. “I love it here. I like to help other workers because we’re just trying get through this pandemic the best we can.”
When she’s not at work, Victoria can be found painting and spending time with her family.

“I’d like to help people, however possible. I’d remove barriers and do things such as provide healthy food.”
If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be doing?
“I’d probably be painting. I’d have my own hobby farm and spend as much time as possible with my family.”
