Enterprise nurse dedicated to helping others
A Registered Nurse at Helen Henderson Care Centre finds passion and purpose in helping others.
Speaking from the accredited home in mid-February, Ashley Manlow of Enterprise smiles when informed she is the home’s Employee of the Month for March 2021.
“I’m shocked, surprised and grateful,” says the 36-year-old who has worked at the long-term care home for almost eight months. “I’ve had different experiences through my career. This is the first time I’ve been a front-line health care worker since 2012.”
Asked how she likes her job caring for the 104 residents in the home, Ashely notes, “It’s good. I love being a nurse. I like to help the residents and I love getting to know them. I like working as a team.”
Married with two children, Ashely describes herself as sensitive, compassionate, outgoing and adventurous. She says her husband would describe her as independent and smart.
In her spare time, she enjoys summer camping and being on the water. She prefers to avoid the cold, Canadian winter weather.
“A big thing with my family is watching movies,” she notes. “Every Friday is movie night.”
Speaking on behalf of the home, Assistant Director of Care Melissa Locke notes, “Ashley is a lovely person inside and out. She is always willing to help any staff or residents in the home. She has built a wonderful rapport with residents, family and staff. She is an asset to our team and the health care profession.”
Questions for Ashley
If you could rule the world, what would you do on day one?
“In health care, we’re not just treating the disease, we’re treating the whole person through a holistic approach. I’d like to see people to treat each other with more kindness and compassion. Everyone is going through something.”
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
“As a nurse, I’d like to fix everyone’s problems. That’s too big of scope and scale, you can’t have a superpower that big.”
If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be doing?
“If I wasn’t nursing, I would be in Marine Biology because I love the ocean. I’m also interested in working with medical information to improve a patient’s quality of care.”
