An Amherstview couple is celebrating a milestone tomorrow that many people never reach.

York and Louise Wills were married on Sept. 3, 1955 at St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Camden East.

Named after his mother’s maiden name, York smiles when he talks about his wedding 65 years ago.

“I remember because it was fall and there were grasshoppers all over the place,” says York, 93, about that special day. “At the altar, my dad noticed four or five had hopped onto Louise’s veil. He didn’t know if he should brush them off. Thankfully, the grasshoppers didn’t cause a problem and stayed there until the ceremony was over.”

York laughs at the memory and admits, “It was a nice day.”

Residents of Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge in Amherstview for more than two years, the couple is grateful for the many blessings in their life.

They met at Lakefield District Secondary School where York taught History and Louise taught Home Economics.

Rather than love at first sight, York admits it was “work at first sight.”

“We began to talk,” he says about their early relationship. “Now, Louise and I feel lucky to have each other. We’ve been a big help to each other.”

York and Louise, 89, have two sons (one surviving) and a stray cat named Katie. They are grateful for the assisted retirement living they receive at the popular retirement lodge.

“I like it here very much,” replies York when asked about the home. “The meals and staff are good.”
