A nurse at Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge has earned the home’s first workplace award of the New Year.

Marie Drohan is the home’s Employee of the Month for January 2020.

“I’m shocked and excited,” says the Registered Practical Nurse about the recognition. “I can’t wait to go home and tell my mom.”

An employee at the home for the past 1.5 years, Marie admits, “I love it here. I’ve been a nurse for 17 years and I’ve worked in many different facilities. There’s a reason I’m still at Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge. I quite like it.”

Married with children, Marie notes, “I like the atmosphere and environment here. As soon as I stepped into the building, I knew it would be a good fit. I’ve always wanted to be a nurse. I love nursing and I love all aspects of my job.”

Asked to describe herself, the Kingston woman says, “I think I’m thorough, helpful and fairly knowledgeable. Other people might say I’m sensitive and compassionate.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Lodge Manager Audrey Young notes, “I am so happy to have Marie as a member of our team. She is an amazing nurse who is always professional and compassionate. Marie has an amazing rapport with residents and has the ability to tackle challenging situations while staying positive and wearing a smile.”

Pleased with the feedback, Marie sees her future in health care.

“I plan to keep helping people anyway I can,” she says thoughtfully when asked about her goals. “I try to make people’s lives better. I want to support people in ways I have been supported. I want to give back.”
