Fun-loving nurse wins workplace award
Lindsay Geris is extremely grateful for the blessings in her life.
At 29 years old, she appreciates every healthy day as she works to control her Type 1 Diabetes.
Speaking from Helen Henderson Care Centre where she has worked as a Registered Practical Nurse for the past three years, Lindsay notes, “I wear an insulin pump. I have had it since I was nine months old. I was the youngest person in Ontario to get it and the third youngest in Canada. It’s helped me control this disease and avoid its deadly complications.”
Proud of her work to manage her chronic disease that affects more than 11 million Canadians, Lindsay squeezes every ounce of fun out of life.
“I like my job a lot,” she admits when asked about her work at the popular nursing home in Amherstview. “I like interacting with the residents and getting to know them. I like to make them laugh, although they tend to keep me laughing and entertained, all day long.”
Currently living in Kingston with her boyfriend, Lindsay hopes to own a house and have a family.
Interestingly, she met her boyfriend at a camp for children with Type 1 Diabetes called Camp Banting. Since that time, she has returned as a camper, counsellor and nurse.
“It’s so cool,” she says about the experience.
Known for her love of theme days at the home, Lindsay replies with a laugh when asked to describe herself, “I think I’m laid back and attentive to residents. I’m also pretty funny.”
Speaking on behalf of the home, Assistant Director of Care Melissa Locke says it is a pleasure to see Lindsay win Employee of the Month for March because she is an asset to the nursing team.
“Lindsay is a bright enthusiastic nurse who always has the residents’ best interests at heart,” says Melissa. “She always finds a way to care for her residents on a personal level and she takes the time to get to know them and their family. She is always wanting to learn more and do better, especially if it benefits the residents.”
