Front line health care worker earns workplace award
Sam Schuett has found a sense of purpose in health care.
“I like connecting with the residents and getting to know them,” says the Personal Support Worker (PSW) about her job caring for 104 residents at Carveth Care Centre, a long-term care home in Gananoque. “I enjoy building relationships with them.”
Only 22-years-old, Sam has been named the home’s Employee of the Month for December. She has worked at the home for almost two years. Her duties include serving and assisting the residents.
“I like it here,” the Kingston woman says kindly when asked about her job. “It was a big change from the last home that I worked for. I like the residents and staff. I think it’s interesting how many residents and staff there are, and yet I feel so close to many of them.”
Asked about her dreams and goals, Sam says she is content working as a PSW. “It was the only thing after high school that I wanted to do,” she says with a smile.
When she’s not at work, the Sam enjoys outdoor activities such as walking and hiking. She also likes to read.
Asked to describe herself, she uses words such as kind, quiet and easy-going.
Speaking on behalf of the home, Director of Care Shelley Bender notes, “Every day, Sam brings a smile and a positive attitude to work with her. She makes a difference in our residents’ lives with her kind and caring personality. She is a valuable addition to our team and deserves this recognition.”
