A long-term care home in Gananoque has been named Business of the Year for 2020.

The prestigious award recognizes a business that has demonstrated responsible business leadership and harmony within the community. It was presented to Carveth Care Centre, a combined 150-person retirement lodge and long-term care home, by the 1000 Islands Gananoque Chamber of Commerce on Nov. 26, 2020.

According to Amy Kirkland, Executive Director of the chamber, “This business was nominated for their amazing diligence and their tireless, continued efforts, put forth to ensure safe practices of care given to all of their residents during the global pandemic. It’s a lot of pressure to be charged with the care of others’ loved ones and this nominee has worked bravely to ensure the safety of both residents and staff, while continuing to keep residents happy and having fun.”

Kirkland continues, “They have kept their facility COVID free thus far, practicing best measures and carefully following guidelines and protocols to keep people in their care safe. They have done an incredible job to ensure there has been enough personal protective equipment (PPE), while keeping up with demands and fears of staff, residents, and their loved ones. They have continued to lead their staff with calmness, empathy and compassion during these difficult times and continuously changing circumstances.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Administrator Brett Gibson congratulated every nominee in every category.

“Each one could have won their individual categories and is most deserving,” he said kindly.

“I'm humbled to accept the award for Business of Year on behalf of the employees of Carveth Care Centre,” said Gibson the night of the gala. “Our industry has taken a lot of criticism throughout this pandemic, some due, but some simply unjust. I have the privilege every day to see the compassion and commitment my staff has put forth to keep our residents safe and engaged throughout the COVID pandemic. This recognition for our employees is very deserving and very rewarding. Our family is so proud of what they bring to our home every day. Thank you.”

The other award winners include:

  • The Purple House Café, Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Thousand Islands Playhouse, Hal McCarney Tourism of the Year
  • Robb Bowman, Citizen of the Year
