It is a well-known fact that a worried nurse does better research than the FBI.

“I find my job has many roles,” admits Dana Bowerman, a registered practical nurse at Helen Henderson Care Centre. “One of my favourites is being a detective. I love the feeling I get when I figure-out how to help someone. It could be something that I figure-out and put in place myself, or something with a physician’s assistance. It’s a great feeling to solve a medical problem.”

A nurse at the popular long-term care home for the past year, Dana is the home’s Employee of the Month for May.

“I love it,” replies the 42-year-old when asked about her job. “Long-term care is a wonderful place to work. I love working at Helen Henderson Care Centre because of the staff and the management. I never believe I am above anyone. I have a different role and the only way this place works is if we work together and respect each other.”

Originally from Trenton, Dana is a military wife who has moved five times (postings) with her husband two children. She is known around the home for her kindness and compassion.

“I wanted to be a nurse to not only work with people, but to help people,” she explains. “I love being able to use my skills, even if it’s just applying cream on a rash or talking to someone who is upset. I also love advocating for residents who may not be able to verbalize what they need.”

Asked to describe herself, the soft-spoken nurse uses words such as outgoing and relaxed. She says the best part of her job is talking with residents, staff, families and volunteers.

In her spare time Dana enjoys singing and diamond painting. She would like to eventually pursue higher education.

Prior to obtaining her nursing license in 2015, Dana was a personal support worker and manager of a retail store. She retrained to become a nurse.

“They’re a wonderful group who work hard,” says Dana about her coworkers.

“I have a great deal of respect for personal support workers. Without their knowledge and assistance, I wouldn’t be able to do my job. I also love the residents. I enjoy listening to their stories. I try to be a friend to them, especially when their families aren’t able to visit. Helen Henderson is the right fit for me and I’m glad I found it.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Director of Care Sue Reynolds notes, “Dana is an amazing soul who creates a calm environment which allows residents and coworkers to thrive. Her kindness and compassion, as well as her willingness to go above and beyond her duties, is truly remarkable. We are very fortunate to have Dana on our nursing team.”

Pleased with the feedback, Dana notes with a smile, “I love my current profession. I like knowing what the residents like and how I can make them happy. It’s the personal touch that I enjoy.”
