A Personal Support Worker at Helen Henderson Care Centre is starting off the New Year on the right foot.

Katie Castellan, a staff member of the long-term care home for almost two years, is the home’s first Staff Spotlight of 2019.

Only 26 years old, the Kingston woman smiles brightly when informed of the recognition.

“I love my job,” she says with a grin. “I did my first placement here right out of school. I love this job because I never had grandparents, and this allows me to enjoy the geriatric population.”

Clearly passionate about her work, Katie is known for her warmth and kindness.

“Katie is a very positive Personal Support Worker (PSW) who brightens-up the home,” says Sue Reynolds, Director of Care.

“She is caring, kind and compassionate about caring for the amazing residents of our home. Katie takes the time to go the extra mile to make our residents feel special. She brings a spring to her step and a smile a mile-wide. We are very grateful for Katie’s wonderful care and the amazing grace she brings to every shift.”

Pleased with the feedback, Katie likes the teamwork in the home by staff. She says the best part of her job is the make a resident’s day better.

“It’s nice when you go above and beyond your duties and see how it makes a difference,” she says kindly. “It just gives you a high to bring someone joy and happiness. A lot of people don’t have family to visit them here. It’s nice to be that person for them.”

When she’s not at work, Katie can be found camping with her boyfriend or caring for her dog.  She is proud of her Italian heritage.

Asked to describe herself, she says, “I try to stay as positive as possible. I’m also very easy going.”

Questions for Katie:

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Teleporting so I can go wherever I want.

If you could rule the world, what would you do on Day One?

I’d get rid of every kill shelter for dogs and animals. It just makes me sad to think of dogs dying for no reason, just because a shelter is full.

What would you like to do if you weren’t at your current job?

I’d be travelling.

Helen Henderson Care Centre values the warmth and kindness of Katie Castellan. To learn more about living or working in our home, please call 613-384-4585.
