A new nurse at a long-term care home in Amherstview has won her first workplace award.

23-year-old Stephanie Bender smiles at the news she is the Employee of the Month for October at Helen Henderson Care Centre where she was worked for the past six months as a Registered Practical Nurse.

“I started here in April 2021 and I love it so far,” she says with a smile when asked about her job. “When I arrived, everyone was really nice and welcoming. Staff even shared work tips and tricks.”

Growing up, Stephanie was surrounded by health care professionals in her family. She proudly graduated from the Practical Nursing program at St. Lawrence College two years ago. She chose long-term care (LTC) for the enhanced time and experience with residents.

“I like to get to know them and to be a part of their lives,” she explains. “I like hearing their stories. I can’t see myself doing anything else.”

“Stephanie has been nominated for the award because she is compassionate and goes above & beyond to help and comfort residents,” says Donna Joudoin, Activity Director. “She listens without judgement, has a great sense of humor and always tries to lift others’ spirits, despite how busy things may be.”

Sue Reynolds, the home’s Director of Care, adds, “Stephanie has a very strong nursing skill set that when combined with her kindness and compassion, makes her an amazing asset to our home and our residents. We are fortunate to have her on our team.”

Currently living in Kingston with her fiancé, Stephanie enjoys spending time with family and friends when she’s not at work. She plans to do something special next year for the 10th anniversary of her friendship with a group of women.

Asked to describe herself, Stephanie smiles and replies, “I think I’m alright.”

Hesitating slightly, she adds, “I love what I do, and I do what I love, if that says anything about me. I try to take one day at a time. I don’t like to predict the future.”

“Helping the homeless, solving world hunger, the list goes on. There’s so many things you could do such as providing funding to organizations in need.”

I you could have any superpower, what would it be?

“Invisibility.”

If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be doing?

“My family is full of health care professionals. When I was little, I was going to be a dolphin trainer and live on the beach. As an adult, I would probably be working as a personal support worker.”
