Couple celebrates 70th wedding anniversary
Peter Davy had just turned 22 years old in 1953 when he married the love of his life.
70 years later, he reflects fondly on that day.
“She was gorgeous,” says the friendly man about his then 19-year-old wife, Carol. “She’s a lovely person; the nicest person I have ever met. She’s an amazing woman.”
Holding a photo album of their life together, Peter is proud to talk about the couple’s 70th wedding anniversary in October 2023.
“I’ve been very lucky,” says the 92-year-old as nursing staff bustle around him at Helen Henderson Care Centre, a long-term care home in Amherstview where Carol has lived for more than a year. Placing Carol in the home was one of the hardest decisions Peter ever made. “It was a tough, tough decision,” he says quietly.
Although Carol doesn’t remember much these days, Peter visits her every day as a reminder of their beautiful life together.
“She was handed to me,” Peter says with a smile, remembering his blind date with the attractive brunette from Watertown, NY, who won his love at first sight. “It was meant to be.”
Peter and Carol were engaged by Christmas 1952 and married in October 1953. They are the proud parents of two children, grandparents of four and great grandparents of 10. Peter supported his family with a career in real estate.
“I worked hard,” he says with a chuckle. “I love to work. It keeps the little grey cells working.”
Asked about the secret of his long marriage, Peter says without hesitation, “Do as she tells you.”
