Tammy Abreu is a night owl.

Talking from her home in Kingston on an early spring morning, the 34-year-old smiles brightly when asked about her work as a Residential Aide at Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge.

“I love it,” she says about her job to provide assisted living to seniors.

“It works better for me,” she explains about her preference to work the night-shift. “I’m a night owl.”

Raised in Odessa, Tammy has worked at the home for the past 12 years. She finds pleasure in making people happy.

“I love to see the residents smile and hear them call for me down the hall,” she says affectionately. “I like taking care of people.”

Known for her compassionate health care and helpful manner, Tammy is the home’s Employee of the Month for May. She was nominated by Deborah Warren, Lodge Manager.

“I have only known Tammy for a year, but in that time I have seen how much she cares for the residents and her team mates,” says Deborah from her office at the accredited retirement home in Amherstview.

“Even as a full-time employee, she is always willing to help us out by coming in early, picking up an extra shift if needed, or doing extras on her shift to make things easier for the next shift,” says Deborah. “Tammy is a great member of our team.”

The award came as a pleasant surprise for the Residential Aide.

“It’s very nice,” she says with her trademark happiness.

“It’s about time,” she adds with a wink and a laugh. “I think after 10 years, everyone should get an award.”

Describing the accredited retirement home as safe, warm, comfortable, friendly and clean, Tammy likes the residents and staff.

“It feels like a home here,” she notes with honesty. “It’s comfortable.”

Helen Henderson Care Centre is grateful for our night owl, Tammy Abreu. Thank you for providing excellent care to our residents during the night shift, Tammy. You are a treasured member of our nursing team which we are proud to recognize this May during Nursing Week.
