Shaun Stephenson finds happiness in the kitchen.

A cook at Helen Henderson Care Centre for more than two years, the friendly 42-year-old is known for the delicious meals he prepares at the accredited nursing and retirement home.

“I like it,” he replies when asked about his job to feed approximately 170 residents. “I like it very much.”

Looking relaxed on a warm morning in April 2019, Shaun says the secret of his success is to care about the food. He appears pleasantly surprised to hear he is the home’s Employee of the Month for May.

“It’s not as stressful here compared to working in a restaurant,” he explains about the source of his happiness. “It’s organized and not as chaotic as some kitchens. It’s a nice place to work. It’s a good crew here.”

When he’s not working at Helen Henderson Care Centre, Shaun can be found preparing meals in a restaurant in Kingston. He laughs when asked if he prefers to cook or bake.

“I’m better at hot food than making desserts,” he admits. “It’s hard to be good at both.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Food Services Nutrition Manager Julie Metcalfe is grateful for the creativity and commitment of her award-winning cook.

“Shaun is a great asset to our department,” says Julie proudly. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the kitchen, and genuinely cares for all of the residents which is evident in the care he takes to prepare and display his meals. Shaun pays great attention to safe food production and clean working areas. He is a favourite among some of our residents and he takes the time to talk with them and make them smile whenever he is working. He is dependable, respected and willing to help whenever he can.  It is a pleasure to work with Shaun.”

Asked to describe himself, Shaun admits with a wry smile, “I think I can be difficult. Sometimes I expect a lot from my coworkers. But I always try to be fair.”

When he’s not working, Shaun enjoys spending time with his dog.

“I like walking the dog, that’s my favourite thing to do,” he admits thoughtfully. “The day is done when I can take the dog for a walk.”
